Social Media and Higher Education: Seems Like a No-Brainer

November 14, 2009

I recently did a quick review of what colleges and universities are doing in the social media. I took from some good sources and compiled an overview of what is happening now. You can download that brief report belowSocial Media and Higher Education.

Many colleges are using Twitter and are on Facebook, but the use of blogs impressed me the most. Both Oberlin College and Carleton University featured student and faculty blogs with pictures of the bloggers. For students interested in attending a particular college, this is more engaging than the brief student-led tour that often accompanies a visit by a high school student and his / her parents. It gives the student a chance to engage with people just a few years older who can portray their experiences at that college in near- if not real-time. The faculty posts help give a good perspective from the more purely academic side.

This is a case where – virtually – the entire target audience is active in the social media. Glossy brochures are definitely not going to sell this crowd. And blogs, Facebook Pages and tweets let the high-schoolers engage independent of their parents in a zone that is comfortable to them.
